A duathlon for children and young adults with developmental disabilities and special needs hosted by BDI Playhouse Children’s Therapy and Lincolnway Special Recreation Association
Our goal is to further increase our athletes’ self-confidence and enjoyment in physical activity in a fun and competitive environment.
More about the duathlon:
This race will use a modified “run-bike-run” format. The race is open to racers ages 4-22 years old with developmental disabilities and special needs of all abilities, included but not limited to Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, and global delays. Each racer will be accompanied by a volunteer running alongside the racer throughout the race to encourage and ensure safety and fun, count laps, or physically assist the racer if needed. We encourage racers to have a family or friend run with them but if not a volunteer will be provided. Racers will use their own assistive devices, adapted bikes, wheelchairs, bikes with training wheels, two-wheel bikes, etc. to complete the course. Bikes will NOT be provided on race day; racers must bring their own equipment. Each participant will receive a race t-shirt and medal as well as their recorded time for completing the race. Post-race food and drinks, as well as on-course hydration, will be provided. Registration closes September 1, 2024.
An additional family and friends wave will allow for kids ages 4-10 years old to compete against other adaptive athletes' siblings, cousins, and friends so the whole family can get involved! This division will race with each other, allowing these athletes warm-up time and time to cheer on their adaptive racer. A race buddy will NOT be provided for these athletes, but an adult family member is welcome to run alongside their racer for safety and encouragement if desired. Take advantage of a $5 discount for every other family member who registers for the family and friends wave! These racers will also receive a race t-shirt and medal for completing the race.
Opening ceremonies begin at 8 a.m. Exact wave start times to be determined following race registration.
We will have a rain date of September 29, 2024 if it is decided that the weather will pose a safety risk.
All race profits will be donated to Lincolnway Special Recreation Association!
